Richie gains his musical richness through affiliations with many of the world's jazz luminaries as well as through years of performing at every major jazz festival and club and writing well over 3000 arrangements and many classic jazz compositions.
Richie Cole's virtuostic alto saxophone playing is widely considered some of the best of the bebop genre.
Touted as a young musical 'lion" and "the keeper of the flame", referring to the tradition of hot bebop alto saxophone players, in his days with the Buddy Rich Big Band and Johnny Carson's Tonight Show Band in his early career, Richie soon chose to cast out on his own, fronting his band, "Altomadness" and developing associations with the likes of Eddie Jefferson. "Altomadness" is never a fixed membership, but constantly changing and evolving to include new talents he encounters in his journeys.
Richie Cole is currently at his musical lifetime peak as a creative musician and composer. He continues to inspire as he is inspired by life's madness.
Have you ever broken up?
Have you ever had your heart broken?
...Then you know how it feels...
This is dedicated to you.
...Dedicated to your heart...
...Dedicated to all your future ex'es!
Here are some of the greatest breakup songs ever written, played by the lyrical jazz master, Richie Cole, at a time when he was experiencing the message of these songs like he never had before, captured just at the moment the loss hit him. Be prepared to feel the breadth of human emotion through Richie's inimitable alto saxophone stylistic depth.
“I”M BAAAA-AAAAAAACK!!!!!!!”, resonated the words on the phone after my customary “Akashic Recording Studio” greeting. These words, from jazz luminary, alto saxophonist, Richie Cole, (New York Afternoon - Muse, Hollywood Madness - Muse, Popbop - Milestone) indicating a new found energy, clarity and commitment to the jazz genre affectionately known as “Altomadness”, came after a period of composition, reflection and musical rejuvenation, writing in excess of three thousand “Altomadness Orchestra” arrangements as a beginning.
When Richie arrived at the secluded recording studio, (which has hosted artists such as Eminem, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, String Cheese Incident, etc.) situated in the gorgeous, nurturing and inspiring Rocky Mountain foothills of Boulder County, no one had any agenda of what was to be played, only an urgent need to express what was going on inside after a heart wrenching breakup. I pointed out that this passion and energy needed to go into an album, musically explaining exactly what was going on. Immediately, the flow of compositions, the vehicles on which to express started being shouted out, as if by inspiration.
First, “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone!!!” …, then “There Will Never Be Another You1”…., then “Stardust!!!”… When Iha, who plays conga on the first track, extolled, “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’!!”, we knew, not only that that song would be the perfect opener for the album, done with Richie’s unmistakable style, but also that the project had just taken on a flood of momentum. Joined by the at times, melodic, at times, burning Andrew Weyl on Steinway Grand and Rhodes Pianos, the ever hard driving Mark Diamond on double bass and the irreproachable Charles Ayash on drums, Richie Cole’s “Breakup Madness” is one his career’s greatest milestones and a “to be cherished” part of the jazz repertoire.
Richie is currently on tour, featuring multiple club bookings all over the United States and festivals around the world.
Mile Hi inspired bebop excursions, luxurious ballads, a beautiful bossa nova and a smoking samba round out this musical gem, featuring a band of Colorado's wildest stars. Richie considers this to be one of his finest releases.
